Tri Training & A Recipe

Last year I did my first triathlon. It was here on Whidbey Island. It was a sprint tri consisting of a 1/2 mile swim, 19.5 miles on the bike, and a 3.8 mile run. I was terrified of the open water when I started training and didn’t really get used to it during my training. The whole event was a great experience and the fact that I survived the swim was enough to make me want to do it again this year! I just didn’t realize how out of shape I had let my body get and how hard the training would be – the bike ride is HILL-E! I enjoy the down hills, but the uphills are a struggle, to say the least.

Jason and most of his family are coming to do the Whidbey Tri with us this year. We are going to have so much fun! Since his  family is coming to do the tri Jason agreed to do it too! And that means that Jason and I are getting to train together this year and I am loving it. I am so grateful for his encouragement and support. Last night I was not interested in doing anything. I felt like my day was a little rough and I just wanted to crawl in bed! But Jason encouraged me to get out on my bike and it was just what I needed. I had some space to clear my head and the views of the water and the mountains were just the fix I needed to calm myself down.

Jason built me this awesome bike frame by hand. I feel loved every time I ride it and think about all the work that went in to building the thing. And I also feel a little pressure to go faster than last year because my bike is so cool!

Because we have been training so much I have been trying to eat foods that are relatively healthy and are going to help me get the recovery I need (so I can get out again the next day). I tried this over the weekend and it is so simple – maybe it’s already something people make? But I had never tried it before and now it’s my new favorite snack. It may be the lack of sugar I’m consuming lately, but I like the strawberries better than using jam.

PB & Berry Tortilla

  • 2 tortillas (I used Ezekiel Sprouted Wheat)
  • 2 T peanut butter
  • 1/4 sliced strawberries
  • a sprinkling of mini chocolate chips (optional)
  1. Spread peanut butter on both tortillas.
  2. Top one tortilla with sliced berries.
  3. Sprinkle chocolate chips (if you dare :)) on the other tortilla.
  4. Smoosh them together.
  5. Cut into wedges and enjoy!
