I’ve been on a little bit of a purging kick lately. I’ve sold stuff on eBay and taken many many bags to the Salvation Army in an attempt to get rid of the clutter in my house. So, I thought today I’d talk about something I love that doesn’t introduce new clutter into my house: Netflix! We got rid of cable about ten years ago, and we really haven’t missed it (with the exception of 11 Saturdays every year during college football season!). Back in Texas we were able to get the basic cable channels with our homemade antenna, and we had PBS Kids, so we were pretty much set!
Since we’ve moved to Alaska we have only been able to get a couple of channels over the air, and those have been sporadic. Our internet service is actually better up here than it was in San Antonio, so almost all our television has been courtesy of Netflix. Netflix has basically eliminated our need for dvds (goodbye scratched discs), and it has let me watch shows that I’ve missed since we haven’t had cable.
It’s not all positive though. My kids have no concept of waiting for a show to come on. They know all their shows are on the tv whenever they want them. Heaven help us when Kickin’ It gets taken off at the end of the month. Hell hath no fury like a child who doesn’t know where their most watched Netflix show has gone! Also, I have a tendency to binge watch, and Netflix doesn’t help me when it auto starts the next show, and then it makes me feel guilty when it asks if I’m still watching!
I thought I’d also include some of my favorite shows, just in case you’re looking for something new to watch. I do wish that I could still block the R rated shows, but the problem now is that a lot of these adult themed tv shows and foreign movies aren’t rated. If you’re sensitive to adult content you can search the shows on parent websites. Then you won’t make in halfway through the first episode of House of Cards before you realize that it’s very MA!
Shows I Love:
- Friday Night Lights
- Gossip Girl
- Heart of Dixie
- The Crown
- When Calls The Heart (Don’t Judge)
- The West Wing
- Downton Abbey
- The Office
- Parks and Recreation
- The Great British Baking Show
- Gilmore Girls
- Madam Secretary
- One Tree Hill
- White Collar
If you ask my husband, this list would be full of science, kung fu and WWII documentaries, but if he wants to share that, he can write his own post!
I’d love to know all about your favorite shows!
